2024 Elections | Panel discussion on women's participation and representation in politics - Pt 2

1 week ago 75

Politics has historically been a male-dominated field, and despite some progress, it remains that way today. In South Africa's upcoming elections, none of the major political parties have chosen a woman as their presidential candidate. Of the four largest parties from the previous elections, the ANC, DA, EFF and IFP are all fielding men as their presidential candidates. Newcomers to the national and provincial elections, Action SA, the MK party, Build One SA and Rise Mzansi are also led by men. As things stand, it is highly unlikely that these 2024 elections will produce a woman president for South Africa if any one of these parties win an outright majority. To talk more on gender equality and women's participation in politics, I am joined in studio by South African Rainbow Alliance (SARA) leader Colleen Makhubele; via zoom I have Gertrude Mothupi, Commissioner at the Commission for Gender Equality; and Faith Phathela, an independent candidate.
