White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed reports that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is refusing to take calls from Vice President Kamala Harris about storm recovery and preparation for Hurricane Milton. "That is something for the governor to speak to himself. If you have the President and you have the Vice President, reaching out to offer up assistance... that's for the governor, it's up to him if he wants to respond to us or not," Jean-Pierre said during the White House press briefing. “Kamala was trying to reach out, and we didn’t answer,” a gubernatorial aide told NBC. Meanwhile, DeSantis said he was unaware the vice president was trying to reach him. “No. I didn’t know she called me,” DeSantis told reporters during an update on Hurricane Milton. Governor DeSantis also said that President Biden called last week about Hurricane Helene, but he was traveling and unable to take the call. Helene ravaged the Southeastern U.S. late last month, killing at least 232 people. Milton is currently forecast to make landfall in the Tampa area on Wednesday.
