When Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi in May 2023 first told legislators that the Electoral Matters Amendment Bill was on its way, he said he wanted to "remove any unnecessarily onerous obligations that may deter donors" to political parties.

He now got his wish, as no obligations - "onerous" or otherwise - are in place to regulate donations to political parties and independent candidates, for at least a week as the National Assembly deferred adopting a resolution that would plug the gap caused by the commencement of the Electoral Matters Amendment Act.

On Saturday, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the controversial Electoral Matters Amendment Bill.
