The Department of Home Affairs says it has received an official request to enquire into the citizenship of 2024 Miss SA contestant, Chidimma Adetshina.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said the department received an official request from the organisers of the pageant on Monday.

Schrieber said the request included consent from the contestant.

The controversy surrounding Adetshina's participation in this year's pageant stemmed from the 23-year-old's birth to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican descent.

"Based on this voluntarily requested and the required consent, we are working to verify and compile the required information," read Schreiber's post.

Schreiber said if transgressions are found in this case, they will be handled in strict accordance with legal prescripts.

"If not, we will accordingly inform the requesters. We will also keep the public informed on the outcome of the assessment."
