Hundreds of firefighters are battling large wildfires that are approaching the suburbs of the Greek capital, Athens. Greek authorities have appealed for international assistance. The European Union has said four countries would send resources to help fight the fires. Residents of Marathon and several other towns directly north of Athens were ordered to flee to safety, while a children's hospital and a military clinic were also evacuated. The weather forecast offers little respite in the coming days, with forecasters predicting temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) for the rest of the week. Greece is coming off its warmest winter in history, as well as the hottest June and July on record.
