Tsunami Warning Issued After 6.9-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japan

A tsunami warning was in effect for southern Japan after an earthquake of magnitude 6.9 was reported Thursday afternoon.

A tsunami warning was issued for coastal regions on the southern Japanese islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, said it was for the Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures.

The earthquake occurred less than 20 miles off the coast of Miyazaki, according to the United States Geological Survey.
