Inter'l humanitarian law I Global initiative to galvanize political commitment

3 hours ago 40

Six countries including South Africa have joined the International Committee of the Red Cross to launch a new global initiative to galvanize political commitment in support of international humanitarian law. The effort seeks to reinvigorate the Geneva Conventions adopted in 1949 - a series of international treaties that establish the rules of how civilians and soldiers should be treated during wartime. Conflicts from Sudan, to Gaza to Ukraine and Syria among others regularly see widespread violations of international humanitarian law with this latest initiative seeking to promote increased protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, ensuring safety for healthcare facilities and medical staff, protection of humanitarian personnel and addressing emerging challenges. The effort will culminate in a High-Level Meeting to "Uphold Humanity in War" at the United Nations in 2026. For more news, visit sabcnews.com and #SABCNews on all Social Media platforms.
