The United Nations Secretary General has told the Security Council that the raging fires in the Middle East were fast becoming an inferno. Antonio Guterres was briefing an emergency session of the Council that was initially called in response to Israel's ground incursion into southern Lebanon and subsequently Iran's decision to launch close to 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday night. This all comes against a backdrop of continued hostilities in Gaza as the UN Chief called for an end to the sickening cycle of escalation after escalation that continues to lead the people of the wider Middle East over a cliff.
