CDE calls for investigations into interference within NPA

An independent policy research and advocacy organisation is calling for the appointment of a retired judge to investigate allegations of political interference in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). The Centre for Development and Enterprise (CDE) believes this has weakened the NPA's ability to protect society and government. National Director of Public Prosecutions, advocate Shamila Batohi, says the operational and financial independence of the NPA is crucial to reinforce the rule of law, as well as bolster public trust and confidence in the Authority. In the 2023/2024 NPA Annual Report, Batohi says the NPA is currently working with the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, to promote legislation to this effect.
